Things look bad for the defendant, Ms. Wu, even as her attorney, Mr. Chi, struggles for that not guilty verdict. After this ten minute recess, the trial will continue - but for better, or for worse? We'll just have to see...
Court is back in session.
...[ twitching ]
Mr. Lee, you look...distraught.
A new witness turned up, Your Honor. He demands the right to testify.
That's not really unusual, is it?
[ straightens up ] it's...it's the witness who's unusual, Your Honor.
We'll be hearing from him later. How about the next witness?
Yes, Your Honor.
[ the bailiff brings her in ]
...State your, er, name and occupation, witness.
...
Witness?
Everyone knows me here, right Shao? What's the point?
Do it for the record. And in court, I'm "Your Honor".
Oh...sorry. I'm Kata Hon. I'm an architect.
Were you there at the party, on the night of the murder?
You know, Keii! You saw me there! Almost spilled wine on me too!
It's...it's Mr. Lee, Ms. Hon. Were you acquainted with Ms. Wu?
"Were"? I still am! We've been friends for years.
And do you know of any relationship troubles she was having at the time?
...There was one thing...
Then please testify to us about this matter.
...A few days before the murder, Shiki and Chihiro had been arguing about something. I'm not sure what, but those two have never been on the greatest of terms. They avoided each other for a while, but Shiki was invited to the party, so...I saw them talking at the drinks table, but they didn't seem to be openly arguing. And besides, I don't even think they were arguing about the thing they'd been fighting over a few days ago. I think it was someting else. I turned away to do something and when I looked back, they were gone. Later we heard a scream...and we ran to the balcony...Chihiro was at the railing, staring down in horror. And then we found his body...poor Shiki. But...she didn't kill him! I know it. Chihiro would never do such a thing.
As you can see, the witness has provided the defendant with a clear motive. This is why the good investigator was so quick to arrest her.
But the witness has openly stated she believes the defendant is not the killer!
But that statement contradicts her own testimony. It is a fact Ms. Wu had a motive, but opinion that she "didn't kill him".
All right. Strike Ms. Hon's last statement from the court record.
I'm sorry, Chihiro...
Mr. Chi, you may cross examine the witness.
[ stands and begins to pace back and forth ] Ms. Hon, do you know how long the defendant and victim had been acquainted?
Since...middle school, at least. Eighth grade? Twelve years...
Twelve long years. During that time, did the defendant ever have feelings for the victim?
You can't discuss that! Isn't this trial on national TV?
This is a critical question!
I really can't say. Female promise.
I can understand that. Objection overruled. Strike the last question.
Did you ever like me, Chih?!
Let's just move on, okay?!
[ cough ] What...did you step away to do at the time after you saw Mr. Bai and Ms. Wu were speaking?
This isn't revelant to the trial.
I have reason to believe this may in fact be very important. The witness is being deliberately vague, when every detail in this trial is vital!
If the defense is so insistent...witness, revise your testimony.
Sorry! I'm sorry, I really didn't mean it. Um...I stepped away to talk to Kyousei. He was looking for Slash. We were going to look for him until Haku told us he'd gone to the restroom.
Is this important, Mr. Chi?
...I'm not entirely sure, but I have another question. Witness, what were they arguing about that night? The defendant and victim, that is?
...
We need to know. It's vital.
. . .
Kata!
!
It doesn't matter. Tell them.
...Okay.
They were...talking about the deal we struck.
A deal?!
Yes. To...ensure Chih's place in the fashion industry. We...made a deal with the company so they'd take her designs.
WHAT?
Order! Order! Order...
This is truly a shocking turn of events! It seems this trial isn't so straightforward as we all thought it would be. What does this illegal deal have to do with the murder, and what will be revealed as we go on?...we'll find out, as court reconvenes in ten minutes.
Please explain yourself, witness. What is this 'deal'?
We...we gave the company money.
Who exactly?
It was Shiki's idea...we heard they might not take her designs and panicked. It was just him and me. We struck the deal a week ago, but I guess Shiki told her that night.
So - the thing they were arguing about before?
Their usual silly quarrels. Who was better, you know? Nothing to do with the deal. Chih didn't know about it then.
I'm really shocked. This is - scandalous.
We just...wanted the best for her. She was so excited. Shiki donated most of the money. There was...nothing else we couuld do.
Ah? Yes, Mr. Chi?
But this evidently shows Ms. Wu had a debt of gratitude to the victim! She wouldn't push him, but rather shake his hand!
If you knew Ms. Wu, you'd know she's extremely prideful. She wouldn't tolerate anyone's charity, especially involving her work.
Well, that is true.
Maybe I am like that, but I wouldn't kill over it!
I ask that if the defendant makes any further outbursts she be held in contempt of court.
Please refrain from doing so, Ms. Wu. Objection sustained.
...Sorry, Your Honor. [ sigh ]
...Um...do I have to testify further?
Mr. Chi, do you have any more questions?
...No. Nothing further.
Very well. Ms. Hon, you may step down. You will be brought before an inquiry council in due time for your actions.
Yes, Your Honor.
Shall we continue with the trial?
[Yes, I may have portrayed all of you in a bad light, but it was the only way for the plot to work. >_> Hey, I wrote all of this in Spanish, Alg2H, and History, okay? And tsk tsk Ada, striking illegal deals...
...>_> I think I'll be the one murdered next...]
