"Wake up you scum!"
"Ugh"
"I said wake up!"
*A series of smacks echoed through the air as the child was repeatedly struck across the face.*
"Ah! No please stop! I just want to rest for a little bit!"
"Rest? our Master has no time for your rest! Our Lord, does not care about your pathetic needs. You are to only serve our Lord, and nothing else. Once you have done your duty He promises us eternal rest within His flames."
"But I have already given Him so much! I have fought so hard for Him! All my life has been for Him! I just want one day to rest! I fear if I do not I may die!"
"If you are to die, then it shall be because He wished it to be so. Now GET UP!"
The small child arose from his sleep near the dung piles. His face was covered with bruises, blood, and mud. He was extremely thin, yet amazingly well built. From his looks he was about 7 years of age. No one knew for sure anymore. No one cared anymore. All he knew was that he was here for a purpose, and that purpose was to live for his Lord and his Master. As an infant he had been able to beat down all the others whenever they threatened or annoyed him. His strength and attitude towards others caught the eye of his "teachers" and he was recommended to train at the demon camps. Although he was not the only human there, he was the only one treated like one. He was small, weak and had yet to prove himself. Everyday he would wake up, train, be disciplined and then, if he was lucky, eat and sleep for an hour or two.
"What am I to learn today?"
"Today you shall be taught the second part of the beginner's tier, but first you will be pitted against the new arrival. Show your worth, and defeat him or be killed."
'Another one? How many newcomers have I fought? Why do they continue to test me? Why do they continue to train me so slowly?'
"Alright I'll be at the arena soon."
"No you will go there now. You're weapon will be provided, and you are to wear no armor."
"Fine. Let's go then."
The boy followed his overseer to the arena. He took his saber from the guard as he entered. Once he stepped on the icy floor of the battle field his senses were all overloaded. The smell of demons everywhere suffocated him, while the bright light of the sun threatened to crack his eyes. As he looked at his opponent he felt a dark anger rise within him. His opponent was not only at least five years older, but he was also fully clad in fine armor. The boy looked at his own naked body and felt his rage build even more. They planned to kill him. This was his execution. For some reason they had hated him ever since he arrived. This was not uncommon, but even after taking down all opponents set against him the demons and humans seemed to hate him more. Finally they decided to kill him. Of course they had no real power so they could not call a formal execution, besides those were too boring. They had decided to do this.
'Well, I guess it's time to piss them off once again.'
The boy gripped his saber tightly and sprang. His opponent had underestimated him and simply smirked as the boy raced forward. Once contact was made the man in armor widened his eyes in shock. He was pushed back by the force of the boy's lunge and flew straight into the wall surrounding the field. Shock quickly turned to anger as the armor clad man harnessed demon magic. He teleported behind the boy and lifted him up. The boy struggled against the grip of his captor, but his captor was not about to underestimate the child again. He boy was thrown toward the wall. As he flew backwards he saw the man run after him, his sword pointed straight at the boy's heart. They boy had to think fast or else he would surely die. Closing his eyes he asked for a quick blessing from his Lord. When he opened them they burned with intense calmness. He was either going to kill or be killed. Since he wanted to live the boy''s choice was clear. The man was strong, but he was also slow. They boy twisted his body in midair so that he would hit the wall feet first. Once his feet felt contact he sprang back towards his attacker.
----------------------------------------
As he looked into the man's eyes he saw nothing at all. They were the eyes of a man betrayed by his god. The boy smirked as he drew his saber from the man's body. He had won yet again. Ater had given him the strength he needed. He walked out of the arena triumphant and eager to see the face of his instructor when he arrived for his next lesson alive and ready to train. Once he neared he exit he was stopped by a guard.
"The Overlord wishes to speak with you."
The Overlord had been there? Had seen his performance, and wanted to talk with him? The boy quivered with excitement and fear as he followed the guard up a spiral stairway that led to the spectator's box reserved for people of great importance, namely the Overlord. Once they reached the top the guard knocked on the wall three times then left the way he came.
"Ah you must be the boy I have heard so much about." the Overlord's tone was friendly. The boy had heard this kind of tone used before between other demons and was shocked to find it was directed at him. "Oh come in. I saw your performance out there and I'm very impressed." They boy stepped inside the spectator's box and blushed a little. The overlord was here talking to him, complimenting him.
"This is my daughter, her name is Selina. She's seven years old just like you."
As if the shock of someone knowing his age wasn't enough the boy was overwhelmed by the beauty of the girl he saw standing next to the Overlord. She was dressed in a fine white dress, and she smiled at him. The boy blushed furiously and proceeded to examine his toenails, all the while thanking Ater for his good fortune of wearing a loincloth on this day. The Overlord smiled and continued to speak, "You are a very special young man. I would like for you to one day come and join my daughter and I back on the mainland, once you have been fully trained. Do you promise to write to us and tell us when we can come and get you?" The boy nodded just as furiously as he was blushing. This was a great honor. He was not about to do anything to make the Overlord change his mind. "Good. As a token of our promise I shall bestow upon you a name."
The boy nearly collapsed right there and then. Only truly important humans were ever given names, and only the best of the best were named by the Overlord himself. "I shall call you Shiki. Until we meet again Shiki. May you be well."
Shiki left the arena filled with a feeling he had never felt before. He felt important. He was so excited by the idea of living with the Overlord and his beautiful daughter that he just barely noticed that everyone, demons and humans alike parted for him wherever he went.
'Today is a great day. Thank Ater for it. Today is the day that small boy dies, and Shiki is born. From now on I wont let the Overlord down, I'll be the best, and take down anyone who thinks differently. I'm going to get respect.'
So, this is the first look into Shiki's sad childhood. It's also how he got his name, and when he first met the love of his.... I mean his love interest Selina. Now you also get a look see into why he is so devoted to the Overlord. Kinda sad... His father figure in life is a twisted sadistic evil god worshipper... Sigh...
