"That's her?"
Adrian squinted in the direction Artemis had indicated. "You sure?"
"Yeah." Artemis raised an eyebrow. "The one wearing the big hat? See?"
"I know." Adrian continued to stare. "She looks pretty normal to me."
Artemis rolled his eyes. "Of course she'd look normal, she's in disguise. You amateur."
"I'm just not a total nerd like you." Adrian grinned.
"Are so."
"Are not."
"Are so."
"Are not." Adrian stood and began to wind his way around the tables to approach her.
"Are so," Artemis called after him, grinning and returning to sipping his poppy tea.
"Why am I doing this again?" Adrian grumbled to himself, before breaking out in a wide smile when he got to the woman's table. "Hi, are you tired?" he began...
...On the other side of the cafe, Artemis was busy preparing an Expulsion. He glanced over to the woman's table, where - as expected - Adrian had settled down in the seat across from her, grinning easily like he always did. The woman was looking charmed, and was twirling a lock of her hair around her gloved finger.
Gloved...and a big hat...
Artemis frowned, unwound his Expulsion, and started to pull together an Immolation.
Adrian took her gloved hand and raised it slowly to his lips, eyes not leaving the lady's. Just as he was about to kiss her hand, he detected a slight movement out of the corner of his eye.
He jerked back just in time as Artemis' Immolation devoured his lady companion, the flames consuming all of her but nothing else. "What about the Expulsion?" he exclaimed (like a woman on fire was an everyday thing to him) as the cafe erupted into chaos. Artemis cracked his knuckles.
"Sorry, she's actually a vampire."
"You said she was a demon!" Adrian shrieked as Artemis pulled out his emergency sfaira and loaded it with a swipe, aiming it into the heart of the fire. "You almost let me kiss a vampire's hand!"
Artemis squinted, cocking the trigger. "Yeah, sorry. Just figured it out."
He shot. The silver quarrel met the woman's heart.
All of her vampire-y self - including her bones - burned into a neat pile of ash on the cafe chair. Her hat floated down gently and settled on top of it.
The patrons all stared. Artemis tucked his sfaira back into his jacket and hooked on his shades. Adrian grumbled and got up from his chair, spinning it on its legs before pushing it back in. "Next time, find out sooner!"
"I think I have the bigger loss here!" Artemis retorted. "I lost my scoop..."
One of the patrons recovered more quickly than the others and ran up to the two arguing partners. "That - that's amazing!" she exclaimed. "Do you two do this kind of thing for a living? Hunt down monsters, and stuff?"
Artemis thought about it. "It's more of a...hobby," he replied.
